Bhutan is only just emerging from the mists of its self-imposed isolation. The last Shangrila is an exotic land of high mountains, lush valleys, an incredible wealth of wildlife, and stunning cultural beauty. We offer 6-night and 7-night customizable options of the Bumda Trek to explore the land of the thunder dragon.

Landing in the Paro valley, travel arrangements will be made to pick you up and take you one the hour-long drive to the capital of Thimpu. There, we will take you to world-famous temples and the weekend market, the largest open-air market in the country.

After breakfast, you'll be brought to Changangkha Lhakhang, dating back to the 12th century. You'll then be guided on a hike up to the Buddha Dordenma statue, standing at nearly 170 ft, one of the largest Buddha statues in the world.

Starting our hike from the scenic Dochula Pass (10,170 ft), you'll travel on a richly storied trail, used by migrating monks in the past. You'll travel through traditional Bhutanese villages, dense forest, and rural paddies in the footsteps of the Divine Madman, ending in the village of Punakha.

We'll leave in the morning to the outskirts of Punakha in Kabisa village, where we'll take a popular hike between grasslands and stunning mountain streams, crossing the largest suspension bridge in the country (500 ft). You'll then get to see the winter residence of the head abbot and a royal palace back in Punakha. This is only part of the 6-night option.

After getting blessed at a monastery, you'll begin a 2-day trek climbing up out of pine forests onto stunning mountain ridges with outstanding views of the Himalayas around. We'll arrive at our campsite, outside the 'Cave of a Thousand Prayers,' perched on a cliff at 12,400 ft.

The second leg of our trek will take us in a descent down to the world-famous Tiger's Nest monastery, the most popular attraction in all of Bhutan. After exploring, you'll hike down to the trailhead, where we'll be picked up and taken back to the city for an evening of relaxation, punctuated by visits to two historic military forts.

If you're taking the 6-night trek, after arriving back at the hotel the evening before, complimentary arrangements will be made for you to be taken to the airport in the morning.

If you're taking the 7-night trek, you'll travel on the highest major road in the country, at over 13,000 ft to the quaint village of Haa. You'll be able to take scenic hikes around Chelela Pass and go fishing in the Haa Chhu river.

If you're taking the 7-night trek, you'll spend the day on excursions around Paro, travelling to centuries-old military forts and watchtowers. You'll have free time to wander the serene streets before being shuttled to the airport the following morning.

Although none of the hikes require technical abilities, we will be at high altitudes, up to over 13,000 feet, which is high enough to cause some altitude-related sickness. We will do our best to acclimatize and will have a very capable and responsive team in case altitude becomes an issue. However, it is recommended that you should have some prior experience at altitude and should be comfortable hiking up to 3 hours per day at a moderate pace.
